Susan McDonald, who has served as Executive Director at St. Agnes House since August of 2009, will leave that post June 6 to move closer to extended family in Ohio. On June 2, Susan McDonald said goodbye to friends and volunteers during a celebration at St. Michael’s, Lexington.
Plans are underway for interim leadership and discerning long term plans for this diocesan ministry of hospitality. A scheduled maintenance shutdown will take place beginning June 7. Major work is scheduled in a guest bathroom as well as some other smaller projects and deep cleaning.
While hands and hearts to undertake the work are appreciated please also consider how you might help with the donation of supplies to complete these projects. I am sorry to let you know that Ms. Holli Powell, the Bishop’s Deputy for Finance for the last several years, is leaving us for a wonderful new career opportunity.
She will be the Controller for the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED) in Berea. This is a wonderful long term career opportunity for Holli. It is also a wonderful ministry opportunity for her, as MACED does very good work for the people of Eastern Kentucky.
I know you join me in wishing Holli well, and in thanking her for her good and faithful service. She has been a delight to work with, and I will miss her contributions to our Diocesan life. She will leave us with our financial life in good order, and we are grateful for all the good work she has done with the Finance and Executive Committees and with our Diocesan Staff.
She will not be a stranger in the church, as Holli will continue to live in Lexington and will continue to be an active Episcopalian.
Holli will be leaving us in mid-June, which means we must act quickly to fill her role. The Finance Committee is now exploring the way forward. For the moment we are looking to find a person who is skilled in book-keeping, familiar with Automated Church Systems, and familiar with the life of the church. A parish large or small can make a BIG impact! It only takes one or two parishioners to start something that can grow good into something amazing. God does great things if we are willing to say “yes”!
During the 2013 Diocesan Convention Cynthia Wilson from Church of the Ascension in Mt. Sterling discovered that St. Agnes House was in need of quilts for guest bedrooms. Cynthia shared this with fellow parishioner Justin Cline and he decided to make the project a Lenten discipline and enlisted the help of the people of Ascension.
Using Facebook Justin sought donations for the cause and received a couple of donations from parishioners and also from outside the parish family. Each donation had a story. Sybl Fleming of Mt. Sterling donated a quilt, stitched by hand, that was made from a well known local quilter Lillian Robinson. Rodney and Marilyn Stull donated a quilt. Jansje Huyck donated a handmade quilt that was made from fabrics belonging to her family. She wanted to see it be put to good use. On the weekend of April 20, the diocese gathered at the Cathedral Domain for the annual celebration of St. George’s Day. This year was an especially significant occasion, as April 20 marked the 50th anniversary of the Cathedral of St. George the Martyr and recognized 100 years of the ministry of camping.
I am grateful for the many people who have expressed interest in participating on the Blue Ribbon Committee, which will shape a strategic direction for the next few years –- or more accurately, to discern the direction God is calling us.
Almost 30 people have asked to be on this committee, and now the Executive Committee, Standing Committee and I will pick a group of 10-12 to serve. Our goal will be a group that is representative of the diversity of the Diocese.
Opportunity to participate in this process will be offered to anyone in some form. I am currently in conversation with a consultant who will help us make the most of our combined wisdom.
I give thanks for the many talented, committed, and passionate people of our Diocese. God is at work among us. None of us are clear exactly where God is calling us; but I am absolutely clear that God is calling us to our highest and best selves offering God’s highest and best witness to our beloved Kentucky and the world.
Viewed from the pulpit, they look like gigantic puzzle pieces that might never fit together! In truth, they are the parts of the new organ at Good Shepherd, Lexington. The choir, bagpipers, and some 100 members of the parish celebrated the long-awaited installation of the Miller and Wrigley organ on Monday at 1:00 PM with a Liturgy of Welcome. Goulding & Wood Organ Company of Indianapolis, Indiana, unloaded the Antiphonal division of the organ and have been installing it all week.
